New Terminator film

This seems to be the year (well so far) where most of the films that I have seen I do like.
The Terminator film did not make much sense and it did not seems to fit in very well with the other Terminator films.

This really is an excellent film. It is on the long side. One gets the idea there is enough story here for 1 1/2 films crammed into one where other directors would have been tempted to stretch it into 2. I would quibble with a few things I read in some reviews.

1] While Ledger is awesomely creepy some reviewers get carried away and rant that he's really the protagonist. Perhaps this is a ploy intended to make a case for a posthumous Best Actor award but it slights C....

The Indiana Jones Sequels

I saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls last week. I don't agree with the usual consensus that IJ & the Last Crusade was a big improvement over IJ & Temple of Doom. Those two films were roughly equal IMHO. The opening of Temple of Doom was better than that of Last Crusade which was too much a contrived mimipilot for the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.

Iron Man

The big surprise in this film is how good the dialogue is. It is a notch better than a lot of Mamet dialogue---less repetitive, vulgar and pretentious for one thing. It is an extremely well cast film---Dowey Jr,. Paltrow, Bridges as well as most of the minor roles. The film is funny even in slapstick mode. The special effects are awesome. Go take a look and enjoy yourselves.

I disliked Boogie Nights and hated Magnolia but P. Anderson delivers something powerful here though very dark with There Will Be Blood. No Country for Old Men

I had extremely high expectations for this film. It is definitely worth seeing but it was a tad disappointing. Some Coen Brothers film get self indulgent (eg. overrated Oh Brother Where Art Thou) but initially it looks like they are going to play No Country for Old Men straight except for a few quirks. One problem though is the strongest character is the mesmerizing villian....

American Gangster

Of the films I've seen in the last couple of months I liked this the most. Some critics have complained that it is cliched and predictable but I thought it was extremely well done and the ending was somewhat surprising. I strongly recommend it.

I don't normally see films like this, but I was visiting an old friend over the holidays who wanted to.

I have to say that I actually really liked it. It collapsed in the last third, the director giving in to cheap scares and really poor CGI zombies, and a really horrifyingly spiritual ending... but the truly mindblowingly astonishing depiction of post-apocalyptic Manhattan was worth the price of admission.

I saw this last week. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, however being a fan of the game series it's based on I didn't have high expectations at all. After all, most movie adpatations of PC games turn out to be pretty underwhelming.

I was pleasantly surprised for the most part. Timothy Olyphant was very well cast in the lead role as Agent 47, and it preserved the atmosphere and look of the games whilst at the same time being accessible to those who aren't familiar with them.

I saw The Queen a few weeks as was quite impressed. My only quibble was with the portrayal of Prince Charles which seemed to make even more vapid and weird than he is. Oh and the bit with the stag seemed a tad heavy handed. But Mirren and Sheen were brilliant.

However it's not my monarchy (the American monarchy was Queen Britneey and Lord KFed) I think we have some Brits on this Board. Would be interested in their...

OK, who's seen Borat's movie? I have not seen it yet, but am curious to.

I have mixed feelings about it. I have heard he is very funny, but also very insulting. But I guess if even the Kazakh ambassador had mostly a good laugh at it, then it should be worth a look perhaps.
